Richard Gerard Schatz, beloved husband of 65 years to Dawn Louise Schatz passed away peacefully on Friday, December 18, 2020. He was born on August 14, 1927 and was the son of Gerard Schatz and Margaret Schatz Hoffman, now deceased. He was also predeceased by a sister, Margaret McAllister.
He graduated From Catonsville High School with the class of 1945. He then began an 8 year military career with the Merchant Marines and ending with the United States Navy. He traveled to many different locations and was very proud of his military service. A few years later he met the love of his life, Dawn Louise Gaffney, and after a brief courtship they married on August 14, 1955.
Richard spent time working at Bethlehem Steel and then began his career at Churchill Liquor Distributors which led he and his wife, Dawn, to purchase Village Liquors of Clarksville. He spent many summers at Forest Hill Swim and Tennis Club going to his children’s swim meets and playing tennis with his wife and friends. Upon retiring he enjoyed playing golf, spending time with his family, the Dundalk Crew and the Catonsville Boys. He and Dawn also enjoyed entertaining and spending winters in Naples, FL with their many friends. He and Dawn loved dancing and listening to music especially Frank Sinatra and Jazz. He was a University of Maryland sports fan, an Orioles fan and an avid Colts fan and he and Dawn had season tickets for many years. He always had a smile and could tell stories that always made people laugh. He touched many lives and he is missed greatly.
Richard is survived by two daughters, Kimberly A. Schatz and Michael Sisk, and Karen M. Staley and John Staley V as well as a son, Stephen R. Schatz. He is also survived by grandchildren Todd C. Kraus, John Staley VI, and Julie Staley.
