Obituary

Robert (Bob) Oliver Jenkins, Sr., husband of Cheryl Iantosca Jenkins died peacefully at home early Tuesday morning, January 4, 2022, in Ellicott City, Maryland.

He was the son of the late John Edward Jenkins and Geneva Cromwell Jenkins of Norfolk, Virginia; beloved husband of Cheryl Iantosca Jenkins; loving father of Robert (Bobby) Oliver Jenkins, Jr. and his wife Katherine Messervy Jenkins, Christopher Ryan Jenkins and his wife Stacey Williams Jenkins, John (Trey) Francis Jenkins and his wife Pinar Jenkins, and the late Kristen Michele Jenkins; brother of Kathy Childress and her husband Rodney (Ron) Childress, Margaret Sullivan and her husband Walter Sullivan, and the late John Leo Jenkins; cherished grandfather of Zachary, Lucy, Chase and Ian.

Bob graduated from Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia with the class of 1963 where his wit and charm was adored by his classmates. He graduated from Old Dominion University in 1968 where he was a member of Theta Xi Fraternity. During his sophomore year he met the love of his life, Cheryl Iantosca. That blind date grew into a love story that continued to grow throughout their lives. The two were wed within a year on New Year’s Eve at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Norfolk, Virginia and this year they celebrated their 55th year of marriage.

Immediately after graduation he began his career at Mclean Trucking Company in Norfolk, Virginia. Soon after he was drafted to serve in Vietnam assigned to the 1st Battalion 12th Infantry 4th Infantry Division. As a Staff Sergeant specializing in infantry operations and intelligence, he served courageously being awarded multiple medals including the Bronze Star. Upon the death of his father, he returned from the battlefield during the summer of 1970 where he immediately began to build a beautiful life for his young and growing family.

Over the next decade Bob and his family moved from Virginia to Georgia to Louisiana until finally establishing their home in Columbia, Maryland during the late 70’s. In the mid 80’s Bob’s career path took him to Pitney Bowes and to National Mailing Systems where he led a successful career as a sales executive. Bob built deep friendships with customers and colleagues who have since become lifelong friends. He never missed a chance to visit or have them visit with his family whenever the opportunity arose.

Bob and Cheryl were active members of their community and long-term members of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Columbia, Maryland. Bob could always be found coaching and cheering on his boys in baseball, wrestling, soccer or whatever their interests were at the time. He was their number one fan, always willing to be a part of whatever journey they wanted to take. Through their children, Bob and Cheryl created lifelong relationships with families across multiple generations and multiple communities.

As Bob became a grandfather, the daughters-in-law who were raising his beautiful grandchildren became his most adored loved ones. Each of them had a special place in his heart and he showed it through his active involvement in their children’s lives. He was a staunch supporter of his grandchildren and their greatest fan on the sidelines, no matter what they were doing.
