Robert Montgomery III Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Skutch Montgomery III. On Tuesday, May 13th, 2025, Skutch passed away peacefully in Columbia, Maryland, with his family at his side.

Skutch is survived by his beloved wife Wendy (Tuss), and his sons Jack and Skutch IV. He is also survived by his brother Mark. He joins his parents Bob and Barbara “Bunny” (Gill), his brothers Mike and Randy, and his cherished dogs Duke, Dakota, and Rookie in Heaven.

Born on January 17th, 1962, in Hampden, Baltimore, Skutch was the oldest of four brothers. As the family grew, they moved to Cockeysville where they could tell you endless stories of the debauchery they wreaked up and down Glenmoore Avenue. Skutch would find joy out in the country with his grandfather, Joshua “Gilly” Gill, where Skutch spent equal time working the horses and running all the farm equipment. He spoke fondly of these memories with “Grandfather” on the farm, who taught him how to drive a car at the age of 13.

Skutch attended Dulaney High school, graduating in 1980, where his outgoing and life-of-the party energy would go on to forge many life-long friendships. After high school, he went on to play rugby for Bacon Rugby, competing both regionally and internationally throughout the Caribbean against clubs from the UK and Australia. The real competition Skutch would recall, were the various chug-offs they would have at the pub after the game, where Skutch seldom lost.

Skutch’s love for greener pastures led to a career in landscaping, running his company Greenmont Land Services for over 20 years beautifying properties and removing snow all over Howard County.

In 1990, Skutch met and married the love of his life, Wendy, and they moved to Ellicott City to raise their family. As their sons grew, they developed an affinity for baseball like their father. Over the next two decades, Skutch went on to coach countless teams, was especially gifted at giving everyone nicknames, and influenced hundreds of Jack and Skutch IV’s teammates. To this day, Skutch would say that one of his greatest prides in life was his time as a coach. He never missed an Orioles game, and made sure every family member knew they won with his “HOW BOUT THEM O’S” texts.

If you have your pet present as you read this, please give them a pat on the head for him. Skutch had a huge soft spot for all things living, especially his dogs. His favorite pastime was driving his truck, with his dog by his side, “helping” him sell landscaping jobs. He had a great sense of humor and loved telling jokes to all who would listen, whether he knew you or not. He never met a stranger and would strike up conversations with someone everywhere he went.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his name to the Howard County Conservancy https://howardnature.org/donate/

Skutch will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
