Sonja Mauran Obituary

Sonja P Mauran, 1932 – 2020. Sonja Pedro Mauran, aged 88, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2020 at Gilchrist Hospice, Howard County, MD. Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, Sonja was the only child of Carl & Stina Sorensen. As a young woman, she enjoyed backpacking her way through Europe. Fluent in multiple languages, she was working as an interpreter for NATO in Paris, France where she met and married U.S. Army Private William (Bill) Hawkins. In the next few years, they moved back to the states, and lived in several locations before settling in Wickford, RI, Bill’s hometown, where they raised their children Linda and Rolf. Sonja stayed in Rhode Island for the next 50 years, during which time she divorced Bill and later married William Mauran and moved to Kingston, RI. After a divorce from William Mauran, she moved back to her house in Wickford where she remained until 2014. She moved out of her house due to failing health, and eventually moved to Maryland to be near her son, Rolf. Sonja was a resident of Sunrise Assisted Living of Pikesville, MD at the time of her death.

Sonja had many accomplishments. When her children were in high school, she went to the University of Rhode Island and earned a degree in Dental Hygiene. She later went back to URI and was certified as a Master Gardener and took several courses in nutrition. She also was an avid duplicate bridge player and earned Life Master status. Perhaps more than anything, Sonja liked to socialize. She greatly enjoyed her many conversations and social gatherings with her friends and relatives.

Sonja is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Tom Mozer, her son and daughter-in-law, Rolf and Evelyn Hawkins, her grandson and family, Michael and Edie Mozer and their son Matthew, and her granddaughter, Kathleen Hawkins.
