Susan Mitchell Obituary

Susan Newbold Mace Mitchell, known affectionately to her friends and family as Sue, Susan, or Mom, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on July 24, 2025, at her residence in Ellicott City, MD. Born on October 4, 1937, in Baltimore, MD, Susan's life was characterized by her friendly demeanor and her boundless creativity.

Susan's early years were spent on a farm in Harford County, MD, with her four siblings, Sam, Sally and Sidney. She attended Towson University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree, laying the foundation for her future career in education. Susan's passion for teaching led her to Thunder Hill Elementary School in Howard County, MD, where she dedicated 22 years as a beloved and respected teacher. Her commitment to her students and to the profession left an indelible mark on the countless lives she touched.

Susan was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Bruce Mitchell, and her son, Michael Bruce Mitchell. Her legacy continues through her children, Edward Scott Mitchell, Bonnie Lynn Mitchell Burkman, David Hugh Mitchell, and Robin NamSook Mitchell-Dupree. Each of them carries forward her values and the lessons she imparted.

Susan's interests and hobbies were a reflection of her joyful and artistic nature. She found solace and pleasure in quilting, creating beautiful pieces that were as much a testament to her patience as to her artistic eye. Traveling offered her a glimpse into the world's vast tapestry, each journey enriching her understanding and appreciation of different cultures. Her love for the music of Perry Como and Andy Williams filled her home with melodies that continue to echo in the hearts of those who knew her. And then there was Patches, her beloved cat, who was her beloved companion and source of comfort.

Susan's passing, though a time of sorrow, is also an opportunity to honor a life well-lived, to cherish the memories she created, and to carry forward the love she so freely gave. Susan Newbold Mace Mitchell's story is not one of an end but a continuing legacy through her family, her friends, and the many lives she touched.
