Ted Stegmiller Obituary

Theodore "Ted" Stegmiller, of Ellicott City, MD, a cherished husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2024, at the age of 93. Born on June 25, 1931, in Brooklyn, New York, Ted was the first son of Henry Stegmüller and Anna Clausen Stegmüller.

Ted’s early years were spent between two worlds. At the tender age of four, his family moved back to Germany, where he grew up amidst World War II challenges. Despite the difficulties, Ted’s summer visits to his mother’s family in Wehden, where he worked on a farm, brought him joy and shaped his resilient character.

In 1949, Ted’s family emigrated to the United States, arriving in New York City with hopes of a new beginning. It was here that Ted embraced his new life, working in various jobs, including at his relatives' deli in the Bronx. He learned their recipe for New York potato salad, which became a prized dish he loved to make for his family. He also helped out at his parents' luncheonette in NYC. At this time, he joined the Army National Guard where he served 4 years and eventually started his new career at Alco Gravure Printing in Hoboken, NJ.

Ted’s life took a joyous turn when he met Anna (Ann) Weber at a German dance. Their deep love led them to marry in 1954, and they settled in Jersey City before purchasing a home in Madison, NJ in 1957. Not long after, their first child, Glen, was born and a few years later they welcomed daughter Gail.

In 1968, Ted transferred to the Alco plant in Glen Burnie, Maryland, where he contributed significantly in customer service and product control until his retirement in 1985. Ted's commitment to the German-American community in Maryland was evident through his roles as treasurer of the Edelweiss Club and a member of the Germania Lodge and Zion Church.

Ted and Ann shared a deep passion for traveling, embarking on many trips together including Europe, Alaska and throughout the US. Ted’s love for nature extended beyond their travels to his own backyard, where he found great joy in gardening and yard work. He took particular pride in planting Pachysandra and cultivating a vibrant vegetable garden, transforming his yard into a beautiful, forest oasis. He even used to make houses for the squirrels. Ted kept healthy by enjoying many hikes and daily walks. He loved playing pool with his friends and family. His culinary skills continued throughout his life, baking his favorites like cheesecake, plum cake and blueberry muffins.

Ted’s legacy of love and devotion endures through his family. Ted was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ann, who passed away on December 31, 2023. He is survived by his son Glen and his wife Ingrid, along with their children Kurt (and his wife Abby and their son Marshall) and Amanda (and her husband Adam and their son Akin). His daughter Gail and her husband Alan, along with their children Alyssa (and her husband Nick) and Scott, also mourn his passing. “Opa’s” memory will continue to live on through his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ted’s life was a beautiful mosaic of experiences and contributions. He will be dearly missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace.
