Thomas Michael Downey of Columbia, Maryland passed away on May 16th, 2022 from complications related to Frontal Temporal Dementia/Aphasia. Tom is survived by his sons John, Brian, and Jeremy, and his granddaughters Rosemary and Helena and his older brother John (Jack) Downey. Tom was married for thirty-six years until his wife Rosemary passed in 2011.
Tom was born in Fall River, Massachusetts to John Francis Downey and Catherine Ann Kelly, was a veteran of the United States Air Force, became a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the private sector, served as Chief Financial Officer for a multimillion-dollar government contractor, and was a dedicated public servant as an auditor for the United States Court system across several decades. Tom’s work enabled him to travel to every state and territory in the US and allowed him to enjoy his favorite hobby by golfing at least one full round of 18 holes in each location he traveled; even accomplishing the coveted hole-in-one at a Robert Trent Jones golf course in Alabama.
Tom is characterized by those who knew him best as a man of high moral character with an unshakeable commitment to integrity and a tireless work ethic. To his family, he will always be remembered as being tough but fair, patient, and dedicated to providing safety, security, and opportunity for us to grow beyond any perceived limitations. He always made time for family and made it a point to hustle home from his work trips to attend sporting events and extracurricular engagements in which his sons were involved. He will forever be a source of inspiration, an example of stoicism, and a paragon of a family man.
Tom gave generously to causes he believed in, and we invite all to continue providing financial support in his name to the following organizations in lieu of flowers: The American Red Cross, St Jude’s Children’s Hospital, and the American Cancer Society.
