Thomas Young Obituary

Thomas Joseph Young, aged 70 of Ellicott City, passed away on April 30. He was surrounded by his beloved family. He was born on January 25, 1950 in Staten Island, NY to Joseph and Eleanor Young (nee Covella). He graduated from SUNY Maritime College in 1971 with dual degrees in Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture. He was honorably discharged from the Naval Reserves in 1979. He began working at Bethlehem Steel in Hoboken, NJ, before being transferred to Sparrows Point, MD. In 2002, he was hired by the New York Department of Transportation as an Owners Rep to build the Molinari Class of Staten Island Ferries. In a move to bring him closer to home, he became a VP at Alion Science and Technology, before moving into consulting for both Atlantic Marine and BAE. He just couldn’t stay away though, and in 2014 made his way back to NYDOT to consult full time as a Project Manager for the newest Ollis Class of Staten Island Ferry. He retired in 2017, but continued Freelance Consulting.

He met the love of his life on a double blind date where they were each with the other person, and they married in April 1973. He enjoyed coaching his daughters’ various sports teams and made some of his greatest friends that way. His 5 grandchildren brought him the most joy, and he made sure to attend as many of their games and school events as possible. He loved preparing the Thanksgiving turkey, old Western movies, golf and prided himself in mapping out every pothole in Staten Island. He had a real New York sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Patricia Young (nee Coords); 3 daughters: Lauren Kelly (Pete), Julia Young, and Tricia Young; and five adoring grandchildren: Abigail, Edward, Patrick, Elizabeth, and Charles. He is also survived by his sister Mary Falcone of Staten Island, NY and brother Michael of Winter Park, FL.
