Van Carroll Helms, 78, born in Baltimore, passed away on November 13, 2024 after a decades-long battle with cancer. Van was born on June 4, 1946. After graduating from high school, he went to Catonsville Community College to become a physician's assistant. While in college he participated in cross country running. Van was inducted into the CCBC Athletic Hall of Fame on December 1, 2017.
Van enlisted in the Navy and was loaned to the Marine Corps as a medical assistant during the Vietnam War. Van was honorably discharged on February 16, 1973 after earning a Navy Commendation Medal with Combat Distinction. Van went on to work in Saudi Arabia and on the Alaskan Pipeline before turning to entrepreneurship and opening an Urgent Care Facility.
After retiring, Van spent his time traveling on cruises, walking his miniature schnauzer, Oskar, relaxing in his favorite recliner, enjoying dinners out with his family, snuggling with any animal that he could hold, and cheering for his grandchildren during their extracurricular events.
He is survived by his wife Ten Helms, son Eric Helms, daughter Emmie King, and 4 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Van was predeceased by his father, John Helms and sister, Victoria Helms.
