Veronica Baughman Obituary

Veronica Marilla Baughman, 74, of Ellicott City, Maryland, passed away Sept. 14, 2020, in Baltimore, Maryland, with her daughter by her side.

She was born Jan. 14, 1946, to James Reuben and Lucy Pauline Baughman in Rockland, Maine.

She lived in East Windsor, Connecticut, for more than 50 years before moving in with her daughter and family in Ellicott City, Maryland, in 2015.

Veronica was a well-loved employee at Travelers insurance company in Hartford, Connecticut, where she worked as an administrative assistant for 46 years before retiring in 2010.

Before becoming oxygen dependent, she enjoyed bargain shopping and game nights with her close friends, as well as traveling to Maine to visit her siblings and extended family. She was an avid reader and was particularly fond of novels by James Patterson, Dean Koontz and Stephen King, even though the latter would keep her up at night. She was a faithful member of the Catholic Church and was a parishioner of St. Philips Church in East Windsor, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and CCD teacher. She spent Sunday nights participating in a bowling league for several years. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her daughter, giving up most of her free time to attend dance recitals, competitions and school events.

Once settled in Maryland, she enjoyed spending time with her daughter, son-in-law, grandchildren and her two furry grandbabies, doing crossword puzzles and cryptograms, and watching TV. However, she was especially happy when her sister and lifelong friends traveled to visit with her.

Veronica had a tough exterior that hid a heart of gold. Friends describe her as a true-blue friend, there through thick and thin, someone who always had an open door policy at her house. No one crossed her when it came to those she loved. Those who knew her said you always knew where you stood with her as she was not one to hold back. She always spoke her mind. She was a phenomenal mother who put her daughter above all else, and whose bond was immeasurable. She made a lasting impression on all those she came in contact with, even if only for a brief period of time. She is loved immensely and will be dearly missed.

She is survived by her only child, Cassandra (Baughman) McDaniel, and her son-in-law Adrian McDaniel, her grandchildren Ilana, Tristan and Devyn McDaniel, her sister Sally Simonton of Camden, Maine, her sister-in-law Marie Sawyer of Windsor Locks, Connecticut, as well as dozens of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Lucy (Grotton) Baughman, her brothers Ricky and Lawrence Sawyer, Peder and David Baughman, her sisters Sandra Clynch, Jill Steves and Minnie Watt and her granddaughter Joscelyn Veronica McDaniel.

A memorial will be held for her in Connecticut in spring 2021, date to be determined. Memorial donations may be made to the Arbor Day Foundation at https://shop.arborday.org/trees-in-memory
