William "Bill" Peters, Sr. Obituary

William Howard Peters, Sr., known affectionately as Bill to all who had the pleasure of crossing his path, embarked on his final journey to heaven on January 30, 2025, at the age of 67. Born in the heart of Howard County, Maryland, on December 16, 1957, Bill lived a life that was as full and robust as his laughter, which could light up even the dimmest of rooms.

Bill is lovingly remembered by his wife, Margaret Peters, and his ten children Heather, Sarah, William, Brian, Brianna, Erin, Maria, Daniel, Mary Colleen, and William Peters, Jr. His legacy continues to bloom through his twenty grandchildren, who will carry on his zest for life. He spent his final years with his brother George, sister-in-law Christy, and nephews Thomas, Michael, and James who he cared for deeply. His brothers, George and John Peters, and his big sister, Kathy Bigelow, survive him, sharing stories of his antics that will be told for generations. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nellie and Thomas Peters, and siblings Nancy, Thomas, and Joseph, with whom he is now likely causing a ruckus up in heaven. One of his most repeated quotations he adopted from his military service, showcased his mischievous personality: "Admit nothing. Deny everything. Make counter accusations."

Bill served his country with pride and honor as a military man, dedicating 17 years of his life to the Air Force and Army. After hanging up his uniform, he didn't miss a beat in continuing to serve his community. He protected and served as a police officer for Laurel, MD, and the Town of Culpeper, VA. He also spent 25 years ensuring that the lights stayed on as a lineman for the Town of Culpeper Light and Power.

A man of many interests, Bill could be found enjoying a rousing musical or getting lost in the dusty trails of a classic western. He was a crack shot, a history buff, and a coach who never missed a chance to cheer on his children at their sports and music events. His love for music, animals, and the outdoors knew no bounds—unless, of course, we're talking about his motorcycle, which he rode like he lived: free, fast, and with a mischievous twinkle in his eye.

Bill was nothing short of loving, funny, and courageous—a true character who could tell a joke that would leave you in stitches. Bill's love and care for others can be represented by his love of building fires and lighting kerosene lamps. Whether tending to a fire in an outside fire pit or in his family's wood stove, or refilling the oil of his kerosene lamps, his light shined and warmed all who were lucky enough to feel its glow.

Remembering Bill, we can't help but smile through our tears, knowing that he's probably up there right now, swapping stories and cracking jokes with the angels, who are no doubt wondering what in heaven's name they've gotten themselves into. Bill Peters, Sr.: a man who lived, loved, and laughed in equal measure, and whose memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those he left behind.

So here’s to Bill—a man who never needed a microphone to be the life of the party and who could charm the socks off anyone he encountered. As we bid him farewell, let's honor his legacy by living life to the fullest, laughing often, caring deeply, and loving fiercely, just as he did. Rest in peace, dear Bill, and may your laughter echo through eternity.
