Young Ahn Obituary

Young Hyun Ahn (1940 – 2020)

Young Hyun Ahn (nee Chung), from Ellicott City, MD, passed away on April 23, 2020 at age 79 from complications of a stroke. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Byung Hwan Ahn, her daughters, Elaine, Caroline, and Jane, grandson Obi Griffin, brothers Doo Hyoun Chung and Moon Hyoun Chung, and sister Hee Hyoun Lee. She was born in South Korea in 1940 and moved to the US in 1971. For the past four decades, she was an active parent and volunteer in the Howard County Special Olympics. In 1993, she and her husband were involved in the founding of the Korean American Disabled People's Association (KADPA), a non-profit established for developmentally disabled children. In 2018, her novel Flowers and Offerings (꽃과 제물), a rare depiction of the April 19 Revolution of 1960 and the first prize winner of Women's Dong-A (여성 동아) contest in 1968, was republished by Moonji Publications (문학과 지성사) in South Korea for its 50th year commemoration.

The family is grateful for the condolences, and in lieu of flowers, we kindly request donations to the Korean American Disabled People's Association (KADPA) at (240) 535-5770 or kadpa.usa@gmail.com.
