Zane Lee Berge, 71, passed away on Tuesday, 25 February 2025, at Howard County General Hospital, Columbia.
He was born 29 November 1953 in Lewisburg, Union County, PA, the only child of the late Mark R. Berge and the late Iva G. Berge. In 1984, he married Nancy L. Biggs, who retired from Fairfax County Public Schools in 2010 and Baltimore County Public Schools in 2016.
Zane graduated in 1986 from Michigan State University with a Ph.D. in Educational Systems Development, where he met his loving wife. He held various occupations over the years, most recently and notably as a long-time Professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He was a Christian and member of many years at Winfield Baptist Church and Glen Mar United Methodist Church where he volunteered on the Finance Committee. Dr. Berge has authored or edited fourteen books and authored or co-authored over 300 book chapters or journal articles. Beyond his career, Zane had a passion for photography and used his talent to capture lasting, cherished memories for his clients, family, and friends. He often immortalized the beauty of his travels, from sweeping landscapes to candid family moments.
He is survived by his cherished wife, Nancy B. Berge; one daughter, Jenna B. Connors; son-in-law, Craig Connors; one grandson, Harley Connors; son, Mark B. Berge; and daughter-in-law, Zee Berge.
Friends and family will be received to pay their respects from 9:00am – 11:00am Saturday, 8 March 2025, at Glen Mar United Methodist Church, 4701 New Cut Road, Ellicott City, MD 21043. A memorial service will then be officiated by Pastor Mandy Sayers beginning at 11:00am.

A burial will follow Sunday, 9 March 2025, at 1:00pm at Shreiners Cemetery in Selinsgrove, PA.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Zane’s memory may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or Glen Mar United Methodist Church.
