Hello. Please accept my condolences. I learned Pat's news on Thursday December 21st when my traditional pre-travel errands took me past Custom Auto, and on a whim I thought to pop in and wish him merry Christmas...shocked to find I'd missed him by *that* much. Naturally, the remains of the day were a blur.

I met Pat in 2011. I was looking for someone new to affordably charge my trusty green 1987 Toyota 4Runner's a/c with R-12 Freon, and Custom Auto's classic Route 1 signage with "Radiator" and "Brakes" and "Air Conditioning" and "Upholstery" was perfect. Pat was so friendly. His prices were so reasonable. While I waited he gave me a slice of pizza. Papa John's I think. Also while I waited I talked to the other guy who passed (sorry I don't recall the name) about upholstery, and ended up getting a shifter shroud and a center console cushion, also very reasonable. That never would have happened anywhere else, it was a great service. I haven't been anywhere else since. There is a lot of Custom Auto in my truck.

The few times the work needed more than half a day, Pat drove me home and picked me up, cutting through the racetrack parking lot. Once he pointed out where to get a good $5 fried chicken lunch on Fridays or something. That was cool. One time, the day before I was supposed to drive down ocean, I sprung a coolant leak. I was just down the street from the shop for lunch, so I took my time eating and then nursed it on up. Pat drove me home, fixed it the next morning, and picked me up in plenty of time to make my meeting at the shore. That was typical. Pat seemed very good at prioritizing and logistics.

We had discussed his medical situation a few times. The last time I saw him was June 22. He had to keep my truck for 3 weeks and have his brother help him tear down half my engine to reach one stupid little hose, the last coolant hose he hadn't yet replaced. At that time he looked great, perfectly healthy and optimistic. 5 months.... I'm still incredulous.

Pat seemed like the kind of guy you wished you had for a friend. As all the many friends he apparently did have are clear testament. I'm bad at being social, but now I regret not trying harder. He did such an excellent job taking care of me and my old truck. I will continue to miss him dearly.

I was one of Pat’s many friends who by chance met him through his Custom Shop. It was a place he owned and worked tirelessly at, and touched so many people. I remember seeing him work on cars whose owners were too poor to have fixed at larger, more expensive places, but he did everything he could to get them back on the road at a reasonable price they could afford.

In recent years he purchased a smart phone and he amazed me by searching You Tube to find a solution to an automobile problem he didn’t have an answer for.

Pat was very funny and he took a lot of pride in knowing a joke that you didn’t. I privately wondered if he shared that sense of humor with his boys, and I’m sure he did.

His family was the most important thing to him. I had never met his wife or boys before, but I felt like I knew them because he was always talking about them. He cared and loved them. He felt the same way for all of his extended family. He will be sorely missed by so many…but never forgotten.

I met Pat through Robert at Fort Meade who suggested I go to his garage to have my Suburban & Ford Windstar (Deer Slayer) worked on. Pat and Hoop always took great care of us and we all became close friends. Pat loved to talk politics with me and made me always feel like family whenever myself or my wife stopped by for work on our vehicles. He was an outstanding human being and will be missed greatly and never forgotten. We are sure we will see him again someday in Heaven.

Pat and I were friends from back in the day. What can I say that already has been said. He was one of a kind, the kindest person I have ever met to this day. I still picture him in his Cutlass with the top down and a big smile on his face. The Kearney family has my deepest sympathy. Take flight Free Bird

Pat was 1 of 3 Napa Auto care that started at about the same time under the direction,( Guidance ),of Janice Blitz from Laurel Automotive .Pat , Larry White, & myself worked together over a couple of years to help improve our shops & Napa's Presence. I recall Pat missing a meeting because one of his son's had just been born. I often came to the shop for Pat to make-up lines, repair Upholstery , guide me with an A/C problem. I remember Pats happy nature, even when he shared the news of his health last year. He never seemed down or beaten, just going thru the process & came across as Knowing he would beat it. Will miss that smile , see you on the other side some day. Stephen
